Learn how to clean a water dispenser at home step by step: what you need, how to rinse the reservoir and taps, and how often to do it. Plan a clean today.
Here is how to clean a water dispenser at home step by step, with simple supplies, and how often to do it. Check your dispenser's manual first, because models differ.
What you need
- A clean bucket or large bowl
- A soft sponge or cloth kept only for the dispenser
- A small bottle brush for the tap nozzles
- Mild dish soap, diluted white vinegar, or a food-safe cleaner your dispenser maker recommends
- Clean drinking water for rinsing, and a dry towel
Avoid bleach or strong chemicals unless the manual says they are suitable, and never mix cleaning products.
Step by step
- Switch off and unplug. If it has a hot tank, let it cool fully first.
- Remove the jar and set it aside, cap down, on a clean surface.
- Drain the water through both taps into the bucket, and through the drain plug if your model has one.
- Take out removable parts: drip tray, grille and, on some models, the jar seat or probe.
- Clean the reservoir with a little soap or diluted vinegar, including around the probe.
- Brush each tap nozzle gently.
- Wash removable parts in warm soapy water, rinse and dry.
- Rinse two or three times with clean drinking water through both taps until no soap or vinegar smell or taste remains.
- Wipe the outside.
- Reassemble, load a fresh jar, plug in and let the tanks refill before using hot water.
Each time you change a jar, wash your hands, wipe the jar neck and cap, and check the seal. If it looks tampered with, contact your supplier.
How often to clean
| Task | Suggested routine |
|---|---|
| Wipe outside and drip tray | Every few days |
| Brush the tap nozzles | Weekly |
| Full reservoir clean | As your manual suggests, and whenever you see residue |
| Deep clean after a break | After time away, such as a Dashain trip home |
Signs something needs attention
- Odd taste or smell with a fresh jar: clean the reservoir and taps.
- Slow flow: brush the nozzle.
- Green or dark spots: move the dispenser out of direct sunlight and clean it fully.
- Leaks at the jar seat: check the jar is seated properly and the seal is undamaged.
- Hot tank not heating: stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a technician. Do not open electrical parts yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean a water dispenser with vinegar?
Many people use diluted white vinegar for the reservoir and taps. Rinse several times with clean water afterwards, and check your manual in case your model needs a specific cleaner.
Why does my dispenser water taste strange?
Common causes are a dispenser that needs cleaning, cleaner that was not rinsed out, or a jar stored in sunlight or near strong smells. Clean and rinse the dispenser, and check how your jars are stored.
